Box Score EWING, N.J. – For over half of the opening half here Thursday, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team weathered a flurry of shots by nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey and kept the game locked in a scoreless tie.
The Lions, however, finally struck for two goals in less than a four-minute span and TCNJ went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 4-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game that was originally scheduled for Wednesday night. It was postponed by Wednesday's heavy rain.
TCNJ, which is ranked No. 19 in the NSCAA Division III Top 25 and No. 13 in the
D3soccer.com poll, improves to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC. The Lions have won three straight games and seven of their last eight, all by shutout scores, with the only loss in that span coming to nationally-ranked Montclair State University, 1-0, on Oct. 4.
The Scarlet Raptors fall to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4 in the NJAC.
TCNJ owns a 14-1 lead in the all-time series, including 11 straight wins, 10 of them coming by shutout margins.
Rutgers-Camden sophomore
Catherine Fiore (Oaklyn, NJ/Paul VI) actually took the game's first shot, which was saved by Lions senior goalkeeper
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) only 1:09 into the contest. That was the Raptors' last shot of the half, as the Lions out-shot Rutgers-Camden, 16-1, in the opening 45 minutes and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden sophomore goalie
Angela Martorano (Gloucester Township, NJ/Triton Regional) made five saves in the first half and kept the high-powered Lions off the boards until the 26:16 mark. TCNJ broke the scoring ice on a header by freshman midfielder
Kathryn Bednarsky (Hackettstown, NJ/Gill St. Bernards). She headed in a cross from the right endline by sophomore forward
Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). A few minutes later, freshman back
Abigail Emmert (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks East) scored off a feed from sophomore back
Brianna Petro (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), making it a 2-0 game at 29:53. The goals were the second of the season for both Bednarsky and Emmert.
The Lions nearly added another goal at 54:04 when freshman midfielder
Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) hit the post. A little while later, Goldman made good on another chance, hitting a 10-yard volley into the net at 65:57 off a cross from junior back
Brianna Cummings (Belmar, NJ/Ocean County). It was her fifth goal of the season.
They added their final goal with 2:29 remaining on a shot by sophomore midfielder
Lauren Malajian (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley), assisted by senior forward
Gina Caprara (New Providence, NJ/New Providence). TCNJ outshot Rutgers-Camden, 35-3, for the game and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Martorano made eight saves and the team also had a backsave for nine total. The 34 shots she faced tied for the fifth-highest single-game total by a Raptor goalie in program history with Tracy Winter, also against TCNJ, on Sept. 26, 2002. Griffith, meanwhile, had two saves to notch the shutout.
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Scarlet Raptors this weekend. They host NJAC foe Montclair State University at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Red Hawks are ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA poll and No. 12 in the
D3soccer.com poll.
