UNION, N.J. (Jan. 6, 2018) – Records and milestones were sprinkled into the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball game here Saturday afternoon at Kean University.
Most importantly, however, the Scarlet Raptors added another victory as they continued their climb up the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings.
Junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) broke the program career record for three-pointers on her way to a 30-point performance as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Kean, 80-70, in a key NJAC game. The win lifts Rutgers-Camden to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC, leaving the Raptors in a third-place tie in the conference standings.
Kean falls to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden's win snapped the Cougars' success in their recent series against the Scarlet Raptors. Entering the game, Kean had won seven of its last eight games and 22 of the last 24 against Rutgers-Camden. The Cougars now lead the all-time series, 48-20.
After a pair of early lead changes, Rutgers-Camden took the upper hand for good on Greene's first three-pointer of the day, making it a 7-5 game. By the time the junior sharpshooter was finished, she was 7-for-8 from three-point range on the way to her third career game with 30 or more points. The seven treys gave her 175 for her career, breaking the program mark of 172 set by Alex Gravinese (2012-15).
Greene,
pictured above, shot 10-for-13 overall from the floor on the way to her 30 points, three shy of her career high at Rowan University (Jan. 25, 2017). The 30 points came two years to the day that she had her first 30-point career game against Rutgers-Newark (Jan. 6, 2016) and the big day boosted her over the 800-point milestone for her career, lifting her to 806.
Greene tied the program record with 7:22 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Raptors a 48-28 lead. She set the marker with her fifth trey of the day with 4:05 left in the third quarter, making it a 56-36 game. Overall, she hit her first six three-point attempts of the game, and her seven total treys was her second-highest single-game output at Rutgers-Camden. She set the program mark with 11 treys at Rowan University on Jan. 25, 2017.
Greene's accomplishments were only part of a big night for the Raptors. Senior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) became only the 14th player in program history to reach the 90-game milestone. She did it with style, pouring in 21 points and completing a double-double with 10 rebounds. It was her sixth double-double of the season and the 17th of her career.
Obasi's points hiked her career total to 1,056 and moved her into 11th place on the program's all-time list. She passed Andrea Fogel, who had 1,037 points from 1986-89. Obasi also passed the 700 plateau in career rebounds, hiking her total to 701. She is seventh on the all-time list, with her next target the 761 boards grabbed by Kate Cranston (1997-01).
Senior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) added 13 points, seven rebounds two steals, one block and eight assists, which increased her program career assist record to 418.
Freshman guard
Shane Holmes (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) notched a game- and career-high nine assists, while also setting her career high with two steals. Another freshman guard,
Jordan Harbaugh (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional), added 11 points and four rebounds, both totals two shy of her career highs.
Rutgers-Camden shot 31-for-67 overall (46.3 percent), including 11-for-19 from three-point range (57.9). Kean shot 25-for-59 (42.4) overall and only 3-for-16 (18.8) from three-point range. The Cougars held a 38-32 edge off the boards, but also had three more turnovers (18-15).
Kean junior guard
Marajiah Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) tied Greene for game-high scoring honors with 30 points, while shooting 11-for-27 overall from the floor. She was 2-for-7 from three-point range and 6-for-8 from the foul line.
Sophomore guard
Payce Lange (Tewksbury, NJ/Voorhees) added 15 points and five assists for Kean.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday with a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Penn State-Abington. They Scarlet Raptors play their next NJAC game Wednesday, hosting Montclair State University at 6 p.m.
