UNION, N.J. (Sept. 25, 2021) – The Kean University men's soccer team scored a goal in each half and survived a late Rutgers-Camden comeback attempt as it defeated the Scarlet Raptors, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday.
The victory lifts the Cougars to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 4-3-2 and 0-2.
Kean outshot the Scarlet Raptors, 10-1, in the opening period and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. Kean scored its first goal in the 22nd minute when junior Raonne Dias notched his seventh tally of the year, assisted by Danny Guillen.
The Cougars added an insurance goal at 76:04 on an unassisted tally by freshman Nikol Theoudoulidis. It was his first career goal.
Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit in half at 87:38 when senior forward
Skyler Diggs produced his fourth goal of the season, assisted by senior midfielder
Kaito Kitazawa. It was Diggs' 36th career goal (sixth on the all-time program list) and raised his point total to 77 (seventh).
Kean finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. Rutgers-Camden sophomore
Connor Smith made six saves in goal, while freshman Dominic Ridge had four saves for the Cougars.
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC play on Wednesday when it hosts Stockton University at 7 p.m.
