Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) collected his second career hat trick to lift the No. 12-ranked Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team past Susquehanna University, 4-0, here Sunday for the championship at the 14th annual Cialella Soccer Classic.
Rutgers-Camden, which raised its record to 3-2 by winning both of its weekend tournament games, has won seven Cialella titles, including the last three. The Scarlet Raptors are 19-5-4 all-time in the 14 years of the event.
In Sunday's opening game, Drew University edged New Jersey City University, 2-1, on a goal 2:56 into the first overtime period by freshman midfielder
Benjamin Audi (Paramus, NJ/Paramus). The Rangers (2-2) and Susquehanna (2-2-1) both split their two pre-scheduled tournament games and didn't play head-to-head, so Drew won second place at the Cialella Soccer Classic on goal differential.
New Jersey City University (1-2-2), which lost both of its games in the first overtime period, finished fourth. The Gothic Knights have played five straight overtime games to start the season.
Rutgers-Camden 4, Susquehanna 0
Ryan, who was named the Offensive MVP of the Cialella Soccer Classic, struck early and often on the way to his second career hat trick. His first hat trick came on Oct. 30, 2013 in a 5-0 win over NJCU.
On Sunday, his header at the near post, off a corner kick by senior midfielder
Joe Auleta (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) opened the floodgates at 6:22. He added his second goal at 14:14 by chipping a restart into the left side of the Susquehanna net over a defensive wall. Only 1:02 later, he completed his hat trick when he deflected a pass toward the goal line by senior back
Eric Cutry (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee), flicking it past Crusaders keeper
Zach Zoller (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) right before it reached the goal.
The hat trick gave Ryan four goals for the season and hiked his career total to 43, tying George Scafidi (1974-77) for second place on the program's all-time list. He is four shy of the record set last season by
Mitch Grotti (2010-13).
The Raptors' final goal came from freshman forward
Jacob Kwami (Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame) at 76:01. His first career goal came when he finished a chip from sophomore midfielder
Juan Rojas (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway). Rutgers-Camden held a 23-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Zoller made eight saves for Susquehanna, while Raptor sophomore
Eric Bumbera (Wall, NJ/Wall) and freshman
Sean Matias (Vineland, NJ/Millville) combined for the shutout. Bumbera, who was named the tournament's Defensive MVP, made one save in 80:03 of shutout goalkeeping, while Matias finished up the game without needing to make a save.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts Eastern University at 7 p.m.
Drew 2, NJCU 1
In the first game of the day, Drew's Audi ended the game early in overtime when his curving shot from the left side found the right side of the net.
The Rangers outshot the Gothic Knights, 23-15, on the day and held a commanding 13-1 advantage in corner kicks, but only managed a first-half goal at 41:00 by junior defender
Daniel Giraldo (Madison, NJ/Madison). He fielded a corner kick by Audi outside the top of the box and his a shot into the left side of the net.
NJCU tied the game at 55:24 on a breakaway goal by junior midfielder

Tyler Krychkowski (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) made nine saves, while Drew senior keeper
