CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 19, 2016) – There was little separating the Rutgers University-Camden and Swarthmore College soccer teams on the statistical sheets in their non-conference game here Wednesday night, and as a result, there wasn't any difference between the teams on the scoreboard.
The Scarlet Raptors and the Garnet played to a 0-0 tie in double overtime, leaving Rutgers-Camden with an 8-4-4 record and Swarthmore at 7-7-1.
Both teams had 17 shots, with the Garnet putting one more on goal, 11-10. Both teams finished with 11 fouls and the saves were almost identical, with Raptor sophomore goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) collecting 10 saves and Swarthmore's two keepers combining for nine saves. Sophomore
Michael Thut (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) notched four saves during the first half, while junior
Ross Bednar (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett) played the second half and both overtime periods for Swarthmore, finishing with five saves.
Both teams were aided by one back save.
The biggest difference in the game came on corner kicks, where Rutgers-Camden held a 9-3 advantage.
The best chance of the game came in the 52nd minute when Scarlet Raptor junior
Brad Maine (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) closed in on the goal line, only to have his close-range shot blocked over the crossbar for a corner kick.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts William Paterson University at 1 p.m. in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game. Swarthmore plays a 3 p.m. at Dickinson College the same day.
