NEW YORK, N.Y. (Dec. 30, 2016) – After a 16-day holiday layoff, the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team came back with fresh legs and a fresh resolve here Friday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The Scarlet Raptors placed five players in double figures offensively, and nearly had a pair of double-doubles, as they coasted to a 77-63 victory over Hunter College.

The Scarlet Raptors improved to 8-3, while the Hawks fell to 7-4.

Junior guard Jovan Childers (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) paced the attack with 24 points, while sophomore guard Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) added 15. The Raptors' frontcourt stars of senior Caroline Santiago (Buena, NJ/Buena) and junior co-captain Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) both added 11 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Ariel Robinson (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) netted 10 points.

Obasi also blocked four shots, tying her career high set Nov. 18, 2016 against Pitt-Bradford.

The Scarlet Raptors never trailed in the game and were tied only twice, at 2-2 and 6-6, before rattling off the next six points to grab the lead for good. They led by as many as seven points in the opening quarter, at 15-8, before the Hawks trimmed the margin to 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.

It was in the second period that Rutgers-Camden opened up the game, scoring 23 of the first 29 points of the quarter to grab a 40-20 advantage. The period included an eight-point Raptor run, sparked by four points from Greene, to make it a 27-16 game. After Hunter broke that run, the Raptors countered with a nine-point run, capped by a pair of field goals from Robinson. That run gave the Raptors a 36-18 edge. They increased the margin to 40-20 before Hunter scored the last six points of the half

By halftime, Childers and Santiago had scored 11 points apiece, with Santiago adding seven rebounds.

Late in the third quarter, the Raptors saw their lead whittled down to eight points (50-42) before a three-pointer by Greene and four points from Childers helped Rutgers-Camden close out the frame with a seven-point run. The Hawks never came closer than eight points (57-45) the rest of the way.

Childers' 24 points tied her Rutgers-Camden career high, set on Dec. 1 against King's College. The first-year Scarlet Raptor, who transferred to Camden from Cumberland County College, went 9-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-9 from the foul line. She added a team-high three steals.

Hunter received 15 points from sophomore guard Selina Lim (New York, NY/Bronx Science). Sophomore guard/forward Christine Patterson (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) and sophomore guard Jade Aponte (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) both netted 10 points. The Hawks received game-high totals of four steals and 13 rebounds from sophomore forward Ashley Arias (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman).

Rutgers-Camden held a 42-39 advantage off the boards and shot 51.7 percent from the floor (30-for-58). Hunter shot 23-for-68 (33.8).

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference home game against Ramapo College.
